NZ Refugee letter to Whanau

 Dear whanau,

I’ve decided to write a letter to you explaining why and how New Zealand refugees become, well, refugees. I’ve also decided to include (extensive list warning) which countries New Zealand refugees come from, what we can do to help, why we should help, what local organisations do we have to help and how refugees can help us.

People become refugees for many reasons and it’s really sad to think about, let alone write down. One of the many reasons is that their country is war-torn. They leave their country and become refugees so their families, or them, can live a better life.

There are many countries that people come from, some of these countries are; Iraq, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Iran, Srilanka, Rwanda, Sudan, Afghanistan, Colombia and Burma.

There are lots of ways that we could help these refugees and they are so simple! We can help them by donating money or fundraising, donating food and water and even just speaking out and encouraging people to help out as well.

We have many great organisations that help refugees including; Unhcr, Save the children, Unicef, Mercy Corps Shelterbox and Catholic Relief Services.

Now, I’ve written how we can help refugees but how can refugees help us? Well, refugees can help us understand their situation and help us be grateful for what we have. Refugees also help us by spreading awareness about war and what it costs.

Thank you for your consideration in reading this letter,

-Atawhai
